Being outside is important for the cognitive growth in young children. Gardening together provides an opportunity for uninterrupted discussions and a bonus Life Science lesson. Children can learn cause and effect by watering their plants and feeling a sense of pride when they get a product from their hard work.
We started with these grow bags so we could easily move them to get watered and try out places in the yard that gets the best sun. We planted green beans, squash, cucumbers, and carrots.

Looking for a fidget? These are great for children to use and they do not spin. Quiet and calming. They can fit in your pocket and are not distracting to others.
River Stones are a fun way to explore balance and work on those gross motor skills. When we get these out they instantly make learning fun. Some ways we use these in the classroom: skip counting, addition and subtraction, first, next, then, last, and of course playing don't step on the lava. Also, for younger kiddos they are great for counting by 1st, naming rhyming words after each step, and saying each letter of your name per stone.

I will be blogging here about toys that are important to the development of your child. Looking for birthdays, holidays, classrooms or just need to build up your summer supply? These posts will be great for you to follow. Today's toys are wooden blocks. Why? They are great for open ended play. They can be used solo or for side-by-side play time. Blocks are great for working muscles in the hands that can later be used for writing. These are the blocks we have in our house.
